Light Speed Everyone knows that light moves at an incredible speed, and appears to get from here to there virtually instantaneously; but how fast is it really? The approximate speed of light in a vacuum is as follows (values are rounded; numbers in parentheses are exponents): 1.86 X 10(5) miles/sec 1.12 X 10(7) miles/min 6.72 X 10(8) miles/hr 1.61 X 10(10) miles/day 1.13 X 10(11) miles/week 4.83 X 10(11) miles/month (30days/month) 5.88 X 10(12) miles/year (365 days/year) 3.0 X 10(8) meters/sec 1.8 X 10(10) meters/min 1.1 X 10(12) meters/hr 2.6 X 10(13) meters/day 1.8 X 10(14) meters/week 7.8 X 10(14) meters/month (30 days/month) 9.5 X 10(15) meters/year (365 days/year) Also, light will travel 1 mile in less than 6 millionths of a second, and 1 meter in just over 3 billionths of a second! Now, if only we could find a way to travel at anywhere near that velocity, it would really cut down on our commuting times.
